Home Blood Pressure Monitors: How to Choose & Use One Correctly

Checking your blood pressure at home is one of the simplest ways to protect your heart — if you do it right. Here's how to choose the correct monitor and take an accurate reading, explained by the pharmacists at Bushra Pharmacy in Al Wukair.

High blood pressure is often called "the silent condition" because it usually has no symptoms — many people feel completely fine. That's exactly why checking it at home is so valuable: a simple monitor lets you and your doctor keep an eye on your heart between visits.

This guide from the pharmacists at Bushra Pharmacy explains how to choose the right monitor and how to take a reading you can trust.

Upper-arm or wrist: which monitor is better?

  • Upper-arm monitors are generally the most accurate and are what we recommend for most people, especially for ongoing monitoring.
  • Wrist monitors are compact and convenient for travel, but must be held at heart level to read correctly.

At Bushra Pharmacy we stock trusted Beurer monitors:

Tip: cuff size matters. If the cuff is too small or too large, the reading will be off — ask our pharmacist to help you pick the right fit.

How to take an accurate reading

Small mistakes can change your numbers a lot. For a reliable result:

  • Avoid caffeine, smoking, and exercise for 30 minutes beforehand
  • Sit and rest quietly for 5 minutes first
  • Sit with your back supported and feet flat on the floor — don't cross your legs
  • Rest your arm on a table so the cuff is at the level of your heart
  • Put the cuff on a bare arm, not over clothing
  • Stay still and don't talk during the measurement
  • Take 2–3 readings one minute apart, and note the average
  • Measure at the same time each day for consistency

Understanding your numbers

Blood pressure has two numbers (for example, 120/80):

  • Normal: below 120/80
  • Elevated: 120–129 (top number) and below 80
  • High (stage 1): 130–139 over 80–89
  • High (stage 2): 140/90 or above

If you ever get a reading of 180/120 or higher with symptoms like chest pain, shortness of breath, or weakness, treat it as an emergency and seek medical care immediately.

One high reading isn't a diagnosis — blood pressure naturally moves through the day. What matters is the pattern over time, which is exactly why home monitoring helps.

Keeping an eye on the bigger picture

If you're managing your heart health, you may also be watching your blood sugar. A simple home glucose meter like the Beurer GL 44 makes that easy, and our pharmacist's guide to managing diabetes can help you understand the numbers.
